El Paso Electric Customers Deserve a First-Class Electric Grid
EL PASO, Texas (July 17, 2024) – El Paso Electric (EPE) is proud to announce the successful installation of approximately 312,000 smart meters across our region, marking a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to enhance the electric grid and provide superior customer service. This achievement is part of EPE's comprehensive initiative that began in May 2023 to deploy approximately 500,000 smart meters to homes and businesses. The project is on track to be completed by late-2025.
“The future of electricity reliability and affordability depends on the implementation and use of the latest technology," said Kelly A. Tomblin, EPE President and CEO. “Smart meters are the foundation of that technology and have been deployed throughout the country to provide customers with the ability to see and manage their energy use in real-time and make informed decisions about their energy choices. Not only do smart meters help our customers save money and protect the environment, but they also automatically notify EPE of outages, which improves response time and outage communication. Most importantly, it provides EPE with information about the increase in power usage so we can plan our system to accommodate it and prevent power outages caused by overloaded equipment. We are excited to finally bring this tool to our customers who we know are ready to embrace the full capability of a first-class electric grid.”
Smart Meter Benefits:
- Customers can monitor their daily energy consumption in the Manage My Account portal on our website or by downloading the EPE app.
- Customers can access near real-time energy consumption data, enabling them to track their energy use and make adjustments to save money and benefit the environment.
- Smart meters streamline the process for starting, stopping or transferring electric service.
- EPE is automatically alerted to power outages which enhances restoration times.
- EPE can virtually monitor the electric grid and identify opportunities for preventative maintenance and infrastructure improvements.
- Smart meters enable EPE to support and expand sustainability programs focused on renewable energy and electric vehicles and offer more rate and payment options.
Smart meters are designed to protect customer privacy. They cannot manage a customer’s energy use or thermostat, and EPE will not share data with third parties.
