El Paso Electric Issues Statement on Settlement Regarding Newman Unit 6
EL PASO, Texas - Today, El Paso Electric (EPE) is pleased to announce we have entered into a settlement agreement with the Chaparral Community Coalition for Health and the Environment and Sierra Club regarding the air permit for Newman Unit 6. The permit will authorize EPE to begin construction of the state-of-the-art 228-megawatt natural gas replacement unit necessary to meet our customers’ growing energy needs. Newman Unit 6 will allow for the inevitable decommissioning of older generating units. In addition to using natural gas more efficiently Newman Unit 6 will reduce EPE’s water consumption by 600 million gallons per year, which is approximately equivalent to the needs of 12,000 households. The continued development of our region has increased customer demand for energy by about 2% per year, and Newman Unit 6 is essential to keep pace with our region’s growth. At EPE, it is our honor, privilege, and responsibility to reliably meet the energy demands our customers expect and deserve.
