Customers Can Take Advantage of Free Tree Trimming from El Paso Electric
EL PASO, Texas (March 4, 2025) - With high winds a regular part of life in our region, El Paso Electric (EPE) reminds customers that free tree trimming services are available to help prevent safety hazards and power outages. Trees growing too close to power lines can lead to electrical fires, service disruptions and even serious injuries. With proactive tree trimming and community awareness, EPE is committed to maintaining a safe and reliable energy grid throughout the windy season.
Field representatives are available to inspect areas where trees pose a potential risk to power lines. To report tree-related electrical hazards or request assistance, customers can call (915) 877-3400 in Texas or (575) 523-7591 in New Mexico.
Customers should contact EPE immediately if they notice:
- Broken or hanging branches entangled in power lines.
- The need to clear trees near power lines as part of property maintenance.
- Sparking or arcing in tree branches near power lines.
EPE offers the following guidelines for customers who want to do their own tree trimming near power lines:
- Inspect Before You Trim: Electric wires may be concealed within tree branches. Always check the area carefully before pruning.
- Stay Clear of Power Lines: Never attempt to trim trees tangled in or near power lines. If a tree is within 10 feet of a power line, contact EPE for assistance.
- Follow the 10-Foot Rule: Federal and state regulations require individuals and equipment to maintain at least a 10-foot distance from power lines carrying up to 50,000 volts, with greater distances required for higher voltages.
- Hire a Professional: Always use a licensed and bonded arborist for tree trimming near power lines. EPE can assist in safely trimming trees in close proximity to power lines when a professional arborist is involved.
