El Paso city rep. says she has not officially announced mayoral run
EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — City Rep. Cassandra Hernandez said a post about mayoral run was a miscommunication.
A City Council member who represents parts of east El Paso and the Lower Valley told KFOX14 she has not officially announced her run for mayor, despite a post published on her Facebook page Monday night.
The post reads “Cassandra Hernandez for Mayor of El Paso, Texas.”
Hernandez said the post was a “massive miscommunication” and was not posted by her but by one of the administrators of the page. She did not disclose who.
Hernandez said the post was removed “immediately.”
A Texas law, however, could remove Hernandez from her elected seat on the council because of the mishap. According to the law, if an elected official announces they are running for an office, they must resign from their current seat.
“If any of the officers named herein shall announce their candidacy, or shall in fact become a candidate, in any General, Special or Primary Election, for any office of profit or trust under the laws of this State or the United States other than the office then held, at any time when the unexpired term of the office then held shall exceed one year and 30 days, such announcement of such candidacy shall constitute an automatic resignation of the office then held,” states the Texas law.
Hernandez said she wants her constituents to know that she is focused on them, especially as her district is hurting right now.
She told KFOX14 reporter Portia Baudisch that she is thinking about running for mayor but has not made a final decision on the matter.
A special meeting of El Paso City Council will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. to discuss calling for a special election for Hernandez's district.
