El Paso Electric Texas Customers Can Charge Their EVs and Save with New EV-Ready Pilot Programs

EL PASO, Texas (February 11, 2025) – El Paso Electric (EPE) customers in Texas who own an EV or are thinking about getting one can now benefit from the new EV-Ready Pilot Programs. EPE designed these four pilot programs to help residential EV customers manage their home charging costs and to help commercial customers with public charging at their facilities.

These pilot programs will help EPE gain insight into the increasing number of EV owners in its service area to effectively improve its infrastructure to reliably meet the demand from EV load.

Programs for residential customers:

  • Whole House Electric Vehicle (WHEV) – Participants can receive a bill credit for charging their EV between midnight to 8 a.m., when EPE’s grid has the least demand.
  • EV Smart Rewards – Participants can receive incentives for allowing EPE to schedule home charging during the hours that are most beneficial to the customer and the electric grid.

Programs for commercial customers:

  • Take Charge Texas – Participants can request that EPE arrange, in whole or part, the purchase, installation and maintenance of EV public charging stations on their property.
  • PowerConnect – Participants who install public EV charging stations on their property can receive a rebate credit on EPE’s distribution system upgrade to reduce the customer’s upfront costs.

“The Texas Public Utilities Commission’s approval of EPE’s Transportation Electrification Plan is a significant milestone in our sustainability efforts,” said Angie Rodriguez, Supervisor of Electrification of Transportation at EPE. “We’re excited to roll out these programs, collaborate with our customers and partners and take meaningful steps toward reducing local carbon emissions. A key focus is shifting EV charging to low-demand hours. Through the Whole House EV rate option, customers can earn bill credits for charging between midnight and 8 a.m., optimizing for both energy costs and grid reliability."
