El Paso Electric warns of scam calls
El Paso Electric has continued to see an increase in the number of scam calls over the last month with more than 150 reports.
Scammers are masking calls to customers to make it appear as if they were originated by El Paso Electric and make the number resemble the utility’s customer service phone number.
Each scam reported involved an automated message directing customers to call back a “1-800” number to make an outstanding payment.
Customers are advised to not call the number provided, give out any personal information or make any payment over the phone.
Customers are encouraged to hang up immediately and call El Paso Electric customer service directly to verify their account information at (915) 543-5970 or (575) 526-5555.
Report any scams to authorities.
Here are some tips to protect yourself from potential scams:
• Be suspicious of any call asking for payment, especially if they require payment with a prepaid debit card.
• El Paso Electric will never direct customers to an exclusive location to handle payment with a prepaid debit card.
• If there are any questions regarding the authenticity of the caller, report the issue at 915-543-5970 or 800-592-1634.
• Do not offer any confidential information unless you initiated the contact with El Paso Electric customer service at one of the above numbers.
