El Paso Herald-Post: Safety Town Returns to Bassett Place for 52nd Year
Officials with Bassett Place announced that the 52nd Annual Safety Town will return beginning Monday, June 11, 2018.
“Safety Town provides children with a fun environment in which they can learn and practice safety procedures with local experts,” stated Alejandra Contreras, general manager of Bassett Place.
“This program has become a community tradition where even the parents of current students were enrolled in Safety Town classes themselves when they were younger.”
Children, ages five or six, are invited to participate in this free summer safety program at Bassett Place. Classes are set in a mini Safety Town Village that features traffic signs, mock roads and miniature buildings that children explore on tricycles and on foot.
Since 1966, Bassett Place has worked with the Community Service Section of the El Paso Police Department to present Safety Town. The program is designed to teach children about safety through classroom-style instruction and practical experience on various subjects, including bicycle safety, electrical safety, water safety, stranger danger, drug awareness, fire safety and more.
Educational guest speakers include Border Patrol and Customs, El Paso Electric, El Paso Fire Department, Drowning Prevention Coalition of El Paso, City of El Paso Animal Services and Y.I.S.D.
A new class is conducted each week with a graduation ceremony every Friday, at which each student receives a free bicycle helmet, t-shirt, diploma and graduation goodie bag.
Parents must register their children inside the mall office Monday through Friday between 8am and 5pm. Schedules for classes may be viewed online. Proof of age must be provided during the time of registration.
