El Paso Times: El Paso Electric Donates $5,000 to Candlelighters “Helping Hands Scholarship Program”

El Paso Electric (EPE) is committed to being a good corporate citizen and to supporting charitable organizations that help make a difference in our communities. In 2018, EPE made a donation of $5,000 to the “Helping Hands Scholarship Program,” by Candlelighters, a non-profit agency that serves families battling childhood cancer.  The Program provides scholarships to cancer survivors under 21 years of age who are pursuing a two or four year degree at an accredited college or university.

Daphney Menefee, a 20 year-old bone cancer survivor, has been a recipient of the Candlelighters Scholarship Program for the past two years and she believes the scholarship funds have been instrumental in helping her work towards her educational goals .

“I’m grateful to Candlelighters for helping me pursue my dream of becoming a pediatric psychologist because the financial assistance, emotional support, and the services Candlelighters provided me during and after my treatment for osteosarcoma bone cancer has made all the difference in my life,” said Daphney. “Because of Candlelighters, I know that cancer doesn’t define me and that I can live a full life, work towards my dreams, and can give back to other children who have cancer.”

Daphney is a sophomore at El Paso Community College, and plans to transfer to the University of Texas at El Paso. Scott Lynch, CEO of Candlelighters, believes education is very important for cancer survivors and the community. “The Helping Hand Scholarships encourage cancer survivors to get their lives back on track, pursue their dreams, and be productive,” said Scott.

EPE and its employees are dedicated to helping our communities by supporting non-profit organizations through financial donations and volunteerism.
