KVIA: Community Solar: Making a Positive Environmental Impact

The El Paso Electric (EPE) Community Solar Program was the first of its kind in Texas. The voluntary program is an alternative to customer-owned rooftop solar and provides customers with the opportunity to subscribe to solar generation from a three megawatt (MW) solar facility in Far East El Paso. The three MW facility is providing locally generated renewable energy.

“Community Solar really expands on our commitment to invest in renewable technology for the benefit of our community and environment,” said Mary Kipp, El Paso Electric President and Chief Executive Officer.

A biological survey was conducted prior to commencement of construction of the facility to minimize the impact on local vegetation and wildlife. The survey ensured there were no nesting birds, burrowing owls or other protected species prior to vegetation clearing.

“These steps are taken to ensure that our project does not damage critical habitats or protected wildlife species,” says Kenton Martin, El Paso Electric Environment Scientist.

The Community Solar program also helps protect natural resources by reducing our system-wide emissions and lowering our water consumption. Aside from reducing our carbon footprint, the facility aids in the protection of our service territory’s air quality by preventing millions of pounds of Carbon Dioxide from being emitted into our local air shed.

“This facility has already generated more than 5,000 MW hours of zero emission renewable energy in 2017 allowing EPE to keep thousands of pounds of Nitrogen Oxides and Carbon Monoxide,” said Daniel Perez, El Paso Electric Environmental Engineer.

Single-axis, thin-film panels that track the sun for maximum energy production are used to harness the sun’s energy and are 25% more efficient than fixed rooftop panels. This program gives our customers access to an environmentally- conscientious generation source that allows them to do their part to make a positive contribution to our ecosystem.

“We’re very excited to see that our customers have really embraced our Community Solar program,” said Mary Kipp, El Paso Electric President and Chief Executive Officer. “The acceptance of this facility demonstrates our community’s interest in different options and ease of accessibility to solar power.”

Recently, EPE filed to expand the program in Texas so customers who are currently on the waiting list can be enrolled into the program. In addition, EPE also filed with the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission to create a similar program in New Mexico. Both filings are awaiting regulatory approval.
