Las Cruces Sun News: BLM approves El Paso Electric project in Talavera
LAS CRUCES - The Las Cruces district of the federal Bureau of Land Management District announced on Tuesday that it has approved a project by El Paso Electric to upgrade and improve energy transmission in an area east of Interstate 25.
In January the Doña Ana County commission approved a resolution urging the state Public Regulation Commission to review the proposed substation in the Talavera area after 300 county residents signed a petition requesting action by the county.
The decision amends existing rights-of-way to allow El Paso Electric to add an additional permanent substation to the electrical grid, maintain distribution lines and upgrade infrastructure. The company plans to rebuild more than 10 miles of distribution lines and construct 2.2 miles of new lines, according to BLM.
Following BLM's approval, the project awaits a formal submittal to the Public Regulation Commission.
