Las Cruces Sun-News: El Paso Electric seeks approval for community solar program in New Mexico
LAS CRUCES - El Paso Electric is seeking approval from the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission for a new Community Solar Program that would allow customers to receive energy from a new 2 megawatt solar facility to be constructed near the intersection of interstates 10 and 25.
As part of the program, the company is reserving capacity for low-income customers, as defined by the federal poverty guidelines, which is the same criteria as used for the low-income energy assistance program. The program is available to all New Mexico customers without distributed generation.
Customers subscribe to solar generation in 1 kilowatt blocks at a fixed rate of $18.55, or $16.52 for low-income customers. The rate will remain fixed for as long as the customer is in the program, and there is no penalty for leaving the program.
“We’ve been very happy with the success of the Community Solar Program in Texas, and we look forward to bringing this program to our New Mexico customers,” said Mary Kipp, president and CEO of El Paso Electric. “Community Solar is a way to give our customers another option for investment in renewable energy, and by proposing a low-income solution, access to renewable energy is now truly available to all residents and businesses in New Mexico.”
