Las Cruces Sun News: Las Cruces named happiest city in New Mexico, 78th happiest in U.S.
LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces is ranked as one of the happiest cities in the United States, according to a survey conducted by WalletHub.com. Las Cruces is rated number one in New Mexico and 78th happiest of 180 U.S. cities in a survey released Tuesday, March 13.
"As this study aims to illustrate, moving to a certain city may help you be more content," said a portion of WalletHub's assessment. "WalletHub drew upon the various findings of positive-psychology research in order to determine which among more than 180 of the largest U.S. cities is home to the happiest people in America. We examined each city based on 28 key indicators of happiness, ranging from depression rate to income-growth rate to average leisure time spent per day."
Of those indicators, Las Cruces' ranked 67th in emotional and physical well-being. The city ranked 86th in community and environment, and was 100th in income and employment.
"It's no accident that Las Cruces is tops in the state in happiness," said City Manager Stuart C. Ed. "The strategic vision of the mayor and city council, great people and great weather all come together to make our community such a joyful place."
In order to determine the happiest cities in America, WalletHub compared 182 of the largest cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state — across the three key dimensions.
WalletHub evaluated the three categories using 28 metrics. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing maximum happiness.
WalletHub is a personal finance website that launched in August 2013. It is based in Washington, D.C. and is owned by Evolution Finance, Inc., the parent company of the credit card website CardHub.com.
It has branched into producing research reports and surveys on topics with varying degrees of relevance to personal finance.
