UMC El Paso CEO Jacob Cintron gets $112k bonus plus $12k pay raise after evaluation

University Medical Center of El Paso President and CEO Jacob Cintron received a $112,000 bonus in addition to a $12,000 merit pay increase, according to records obtained by the El Paso Times through the Texas Public Information Act.

Cintron received an 84 percent rating on his 2017 evaluation after his first year at the helm of the county hospital. He was awarded a merit increase of 2.52 percent, raising his annual base salary to $492,096.

In addition, Cintron received an $112,320 bonus — a performance incentive based on his meeting goals outlined by the UMC Board of Managers when he was hired. Those goals were in areas such as financial performance, patient satisfaction ratings and quality of care.

Both the merit increase and the bonus, which were approved by the UMC board Jan. 9, are retroactive to Oct. 1 when the hospital's fiscal year started, documents show.

In a written statement to El Paso Times, Cintron described his first year at UMC as a success, saying the hospital district expanded access to care for El Pasoans with the opening of new clinics on the East Side and West Side.

“El Paso now has 100,000 square feet of new medical care facilities with the opening of these new centers of care,” he said in the statement. “With our successes in growing our service lines, improving our facilities and our challenges have been to pay close attention to our operations, training and resources to ensure we maintain the same level or better care than our community expects of us."

Cintron in his statement did not elaborate on challenges he faced in 2017 and how they might have been reflected in his evaluation. But he said he was looking forward to the next year as CEO of the county hospital.

"The coming year includes many more opportunities for us to bring the very best of medical care to our fellow El Pasoans,” he said in the statement.

The former CEO of Del Sol Medical Center, Cintron was hired at UMC in July 2016. He replaced Jim Valenti, who was making a base salary of $470,000 when he retired in 2016 after 12 years as the hospital's chief executive officer.
