Voters to decide whether El Paso mayor, City Council get pay raises

The El Paso City Council has taken the next steps to allow voters in November to decide whether its members will get pay raises.

The council on Tuesday passed an ordinance ordering a special election Nov. 6 for an amendment to the City Charter that would increase the mayor and city representatives' salaries.

Under the proposal, city representatives would get paid $45,300 per year. City representatives currently earn $29,000, which would be a $16,300 increase.

The mayor currently earns $45,000 per year. Voters will decide whether the annual salary will increase to $67,950 — a $22,950 increase.

If approved, the pay raises would not go into effect until 2019. The base salaries would then be revised annually.

Voters in November also will vote on who will represent Districts 1, 5, 6 and 8.

City Rep. Peter Svarzbein, who will run for reelection, currently represents West Side District 1; city Rep. Michiel Noe, who has served two terms and is not up for reelection, currently represents East Side District 5; city Rep. Claudia Ordaz Perez, who has said she will run for reelection, represents East-Valley District 6 and city Rep. Cissy Lizarraga, who was elected to fill the seat vacated after former city Rep. Cortney Niland resigned, represents South-West District 8.
