WinterFest season will commence with a unique virtual launch celebration Saturday, Dec. 5.

The online celebration will include various virtual programs and festive events created by the City’s Quality of Life Departments, the El Paso International Airport and Destination El Paso.

The Parks and Recreation Department will also highlight live, online performances starting at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Throughout the WinterFest season, which runs Dec. 5 to Jan. 3, expect holiday lights at San Jacinto Plaza, the Arts Festival Plaza, Paseo de Las Luces, and the El Paso International Airport. Visitors can enjoy the festive season by driving through these areas from their vehicles.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to modify this year’s WinterFest season,” Deputy City Manager Tracey Jerome said. “There are many virtual, interactive events for families to enjoy at home. Plus, we have moved to a drive-thru WinterFest format that encourages visitors to enjoy the season as a drive-by experience when possible.”

As a safety precaution, signage throughout San Jacinto Plaza will remind people about social distancing, wearing face coverings and other best practices.

Security guards at the plaza will be assisting with the enforcement of restrictions on gatherings.

The general manager of Destination El Paso Bryan Crowe said ice skating and downtown events would not be a part of their WinterFest for the 2020 season.

The city has partnered with El Paso Electric to bring a live theater experience to El Pasoans in the comfort of their own home. “Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol” is now available for streaming via smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop computer, or on a smart TV.
