Alternative Community Meetings RE El Paso Electric Sale to IIF, hosted by Sunrise El Paso
Alternative Community Meeting #1 (Jan. 31, 2020), hosted by Sunrise El Paso: There were 30 attendees at one point and was a mix of a Q&A and round table discussion. More than half of the folks there were members of Sunrise El Paso. Tyson Slocum was in attendance but it was via webcam and he spoke for about 15-20 minutes on his position with Public Citizen and history similar to this situation with EPE. The only local news station present was KFOX/CBS and they sent a photog named Daniel Rueda. Vic Kolenc of the El Paso Times was also present for about half of the meeting. The main speaker tonight was Dominic Chacon of Sunrise El Paso. As of right now Tyson will not be attending the council meeting Monday or Tuesday BUT he is open to possibly making statements via webcam again. Some attendees did bring up the idea of bringing him to El Paso to physically attend the meetings but none of that was concrete before the end of the meeting. There were no elected officials at all in attendance. They spoke of city council voting last time and mayor Margo being the tie breaker in the vote and wanting to look into if that move by him was allowed because of a relationship or stake he has in EPE. For Monday and Tuesday they plan on attending the meetings but don’t intend on protesting or making a ruckus. Instead they encouraged folks to show up in numbers and sign up to speak before council. While they will have banners and signs showing their support they will be acting accordingly and not out of line in any way, shape or form. Only additional plans will be to meet with folks tomorrow and Sunday to Inform people similar to what they did tonight and to prepare for their presentations come Monday/Tuesday.
Alternative Community Meeting #2 (Feb. 1, 2020), hosted by Sunrise El Paso: There were 35 people in attendance. Blanca Gadney Moss and her husband discussed the Green New Deal and asked people to sign various online pro-environment petitions. Sunrise El Paso was registering people to vote. They asked people to sign up to speak at Tuesday’s City Council meeting and when to arrive, where to meet. There was no media present and the meeting lasted almost two hours. It’s unknown if the same individuals participated from Friday’s meeting since we had someone different attend tonight.
