El Paso Times: EPISD board to consider audit of trustee Susie Byrd over role in Escobar campaign

The El Paso Independent School District board of trustees will consider approving an audit into whether trustee Susie Byrd, working as campaign manager for former County Judge Veronica Escobar, secured donations and endorsements from district vendors for the congressional candidate.

The audit request is listed on the agenda for the board's upcoming meeting Tuesday. The agenda for that meeting was posted online at 8:21 p.m. Thursday.

Former EPISD board President Dori Fenenbock, who is running against Escobar for the 16th Congressional District seat, sent out an email about the agenda, saying the following:

"Yesterday, members of the EPISD Board of Trustees put forward a formal request to approve an audit investigating the activities of District 3 trustee Susie Byrd. Byrd failed to disclose to trustees or to the Superintendent a potential conflict of interest in receiving funds to serve as a campaign manager for congressional candidate for TX-16 Veronica Escobar."

Last month, an EPISD internal audit identified practices that found "indicators of vendor favoritism, insider information and bid tailoring" related to a contract with the San Diego-based company Gafcon.

The audit found EPISD officials, including Superintendent Juan Cabrera, acted in accordance with district and state policies, in some cases because no such policies exist.
