El Paso Times: Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar honors El Paso Electric CEO Mary Kipp, female workers
Women play a critical role in the Texas workforce because they make up half of the state's 12 million workers, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said at a news conference Wednesday at El Paso City Hall.
El Paso was Hegar's third stop on what he's labeled his Good for Texas Tour: Women in the Workforce Edition, which highlights data from a Comptroller's Office study looking at women's big role in the workforce and as owners of businesses.
He paid tribute to El Paso Electric Chief Executive Officer Mary Kipp, who he noted worked her way up through the company to become its CEO in December 2015.
Kipp led Hegar on a tour of the company's new Montana power plant and community solar facility in far East El Paso County on Wednesday morning. Hegar also had lunch with El Paso Mayor Dee Margo to discuss various issues related to the city, he said.
Hegar also highlighted the trade, transportation and utilities sector, which, he said, accounts for 20 percent of the Texas economy, which he said is the world's 10th largest economy.
Hegar, a Republican, is running for a second term against a woman — Democrat Joi Chevalier, an Austin entrepreneur. However, Hegar said he's not campaigning during his El Paso visit.
