El Paso weather: Residents should take heed of high winds
Hold on to your purses. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for southern New Mexico and far West Texas including El Paso for Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
"The strongest winds are expected during the late morning and afternoon hours of Wednesday. Winds will begin to slacken after sunset," the release stated.
Winds will be blowing dust in some areas with a speed of 35 to 45 miles per hour with gusts as much as 60 miles per hour.
Winds will be strong enough to cause damage to vegetation, some structures and may cause power outages, according to weather officials. Travel will become difficult, especially for high profile vehicles in cross-winds.
The El Paso landfill, at 2300 Darrington Road, closed early Tuesday due to the persistent winds and low visibility. The landfill may close early Wednesday depending on the weather, a city release stated.
